EXORCISM - - (erotic) - D: Jess Franco

THE EXORCIST - 1973
- (demonic possession) - D: William Freidkin, Writer novel/screenplay: William Peter Blatty (who , ironically, was known for writing several successful Hollywood comedies of the late fifties/sixties.) Jason Miller, Lee J. Cobb, Linda Blair, Ellen Burstyn, Max Von Sydow.
Based on Blatty's novel which was based on a semi-true case of an alledgedlly possessed boy in Mt. Ranier, near washington DC (alledgedly.) Interestingly enough the film predicts the true events surrounding a French girl named Annilese Michel who died while under an excruciateingly long, severe exorcism that began the year the film was released. Recently a movie about Annilese's story has been made starring Laura Linney. I haven't seen it yet but I'm sure it sucks.
All demonic possession movies suck for the most part. Except for "The Exorcist"! Nearly every demonic possession movie is an idiotic and repulsive (and I don't mean that in a good way) attempt to capture any semblance of what makes The Exorcist perhaps the greatest horror film of all time, if not the scariest. There have been many sequels and knock-offs: "Exorcist 2 The Heretic, 3, & 4 (All pale by a million miles to the original and none involving Freidkin or blatty except 3 which was written and directed by Blatty and only sublimely delivers any true scares. Ironically the novel 'Legion' which was adapted by Blatty into '3' is a great book and worth reading if you are a fan of Blatty or just really good suspenseful novels.) House of Exorcism (Jess Franco Hodgepodge), The Temptor, Audrey Rose, Good Against Evil, A blax-ploitation rip-off that I can't remember the name of, and many more.
It's funny that younger audiences don't seem to be that impressed (My friend, Monty Bass). No doubt, I guess. With today's action pacing, high-tech FX palettes, and routinely gratuitous, mindless splattering and dissection of the human form for shock value younger viewers have already seen the worst of the worst of what the eyes can grasp.
Nonetheless, The Exorcist is the single most bone-disturbing film to exist on celluloid. The make-up and FX are impecable. The films direction is so faithful to the book that it is an amazing accomplishment for Freidkin and everyone involved in the making of the film. Burstyn, Cobb, Miller, Sydow and Blair deliver unsettleling, starkly realistic performances as well. Adding to the realism of the film is the fact that (Freidkin's idea) four priests in the film are actually priests in real life, and being from the same area that the boy that the book was inspired by lived during the alledged possession. When this movie came out it scared the shit out of the world. I saw it on TV for the first time around 1977 (two years after I was scared shitless by the novel) and I was equally disturbed by the film's intensity. I must have slept with my light on for months (no exageration,) and no film has ever affected me that way since. It was banned in more country's than any other film in history and set the bar for special effects and the artistic integrity that can exist in a horror movie. I think I've seen it over forty times (I'm still beat by Beetlejuice.)
The novel on it's own is beyond scary. Easily the scariest work of fiction ever written. If you don't believe me go out and get it. Read it alone. Try in the dark. I guarantee you won't be able to read it without many lights on in the house. I've read the novel 9 times and I can't do it without every light on within my sight. I feel very strongly that Reagan/Pazuzzu is hands down the most infamous horror creature ever created on the printed page (or celluloid), only palely rivaled by Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, or Stoker's Dracula.
I dig on Linda Blair. Her career specifically relies on her role in The Exorcist, unfortunately. Without that role she would have never been a household name. She has probably done more bad movies than any other actress in history. She has also probably personally delivered some of the worst acting in the history of cinema as well. It's not always her fault, however sometimes it is. Nonetheless, I dig on her and she has done a few good films, but only one great one. She was also highly praised for her role opposite Mark Hamill in "Portrait of A Teenage Alcoholic", and in "Born Innocent" about a troubled youth in an adolescent detention home. I will not give The Exorcist a Horror Hottie rating for Ms. Blair's presence because that would just be weird, because she was 12 at the time. Sharon, The house Assistant to Reagan's mother in the film is fine though.
(FREIDKIN: the exorcist.)
