INTRODUCTION:
These are the reviews
of the horror films that I have seen in the last two decades.
The reviews are in my own words and only I represent the opinions
and criticisms contained herein. When possible I will comment
on as much as possible, time considered. I will certainly
be prejudiced to my favorites and also to my most loathed,
but I contend that these reviews would hold up in a court
of movie law if one existed. If I think it sucked, I will
say that I think That it sucked. However I will try to be
more intelligent and educated in my criticisms. Hey, sometimes
you have to call a pile of crap a pile of crap.
I believe that when you
sit down to watch a movie you are giving the artists and filmmakers
an hour and a half to two hours of your life. Art is
about expression and films are art. No death to the filmmakers
who make a bad film, or even multiple bad films, even horribly
insulting bad films. But when a title says "Cannibal
Holocaust", I want to at least see a little holocaust
and at least a decent cannibal. The titles of horror films
(mainly imported ones) are less often in the hands of the
makers of the film. It is often done as afterthought/marketing
angle by the distributor or a brainstorming session of executives
and strategists.
Additionally, more reviews will be added weekly so check back to check up on that obscure horror movie before you rent it for 3 or 4 duckets. Or worse, buy it for an over-bloated $20.
I will also look for
the salvageable among the hornswaggle. The cream among the
crap. I even try to find positives in the worst performances,
screenplays and with biting affection for the poorest of direction.
I will also strive for the most complete international horror
film review database. But give me time. I'm only one horror
movie freak among an ocean of horror films (of which a small
sea deserves infamy.)
Films will be rated
from 1 - 10 skulls. The notoriously bad "Zombies
Lake" gets a 1 while the modern masterpeice of horror
"John Carpenetr's The Thing" gets 9 skulls.
Films are listed alphabetically regardless of trilogy title, sequels, or otherwise (barring the omittance of 'the', 'an' 'of', etc. at the beginning of a title.) Films are cross referenced for director only for movies that are considered to be horror or a horror sub-genre and encased in parenthesis at the end of the review.
Lastly, comedies, musicals, some sci-fi dealing with a horror theme are also included. This will occasionally bring in some obscure musical or comedy. Do not be alarmed. There is nothing wrong. This is normal.
Something else that will constantly be referred to is sub-genres. Alien-ripoff sub-genre, Haunted House sub-genre, rape/revenge, giallo, TV movie, werewolves, vampires, zombies, Italian Zombies, exploitation, blaxploitation, slasher films, etc. Many films will be included in more than one category such as 'haunted house/exploitation' or 'Ghost/Japanese'. Here is a topical index of some of the more popular sub-genres of what we call "Horror". The films listed in this sub-genre index are some of the staples/innovators of that category.
