Boogah! The short film by Johnny & David Butler tells the
true story of two young lovers who went exploring in the backwoods
of North Carolina in July, 1985 looking for the legendary Norkett
House but wound up discovering more than they could imagine.

A psychological thriller that capitalizes on folklore and ghost stories
surrounding this historical area of Mecklenburg County, just outside of
Charlotte. The film also involves the legendary birthplace of Hezekiah
Alexander and the century and a half old tales of it's spector.

       "A genuinely creepy short film..."

Boogah was shot in the Spring of 1999 on location in Reedy Creek Nature Preserve. This was early in Johnnyfilms' history and the original version of the film was edited on two VCRs. In late 2005, the film was finally edited with professional equipment and mastered from the original tapes. The new edit remained 95% true to the original cut. Several music choices were changed, some visual & sound effects recreated and several scenes extended. The effect is awesome! Finally this film sees the light of day. The DVD also includes 28 minutes of behind the scenes, deleted scenes, folklore research, and the true events that helped shape the story and it's evolution into one scary short film.

The film was shot on DV and was the third film that David & I made together, following 'Lost Vegas', 'and

'Fight Scene'. We were trying to come up with something simple to do without alot of props and locations. I had the idea to a guy in the woods being chased by an unknown thing with psychological fear being the main character and we agreed to try and create a heavy moody film. We originally planned the project to come in at about six or seven minutes but as we neared production many different concepts and specifics began to accummulate like electrons sur-rounding a nucleus. The main catalyst for all this hoopla was David's familiarity and logged hours in Reedy Creek Nature Preserve which lies just Northeast of Charlote, North Carolina. He insisted that we must include these old historic ruins one being buried (so to speak) in some deep parts of the 10-square-mile park.

Adam DeWitte provided an impromptu performance as The Tour Guide, which he actually was and the

tour in Boogah! is real as well. Much of the eventual manifestation of the unseen fearful thing we had envisioned was taken directly from the ghost stories and folklore that he told on camera for us. His stories turned out to be invaluable to the production and for helping to create backgrounds and person-alities to our obscure and unseen antagonist. Adam is present-ly a conservationist with Mecklenburg County.

Krystal was an obvious addition to the cast as the girlfriend. She had also done some location scouting for the film with David prior to production and even became immersed in an experience that was not completely unlike the basic premise of the movie.

The newly mastered DVD features a 22 minute documentary that disects in detail the strange experience that Krystal and David had while they

explored the Norkett House that is featured in the film. The events that took place that day are still inexplic-able to David and Krystal and the documentary will give you goosebumps. I'm not going to tell you what happens. I wouldn't want to spoil the surprise anymore than the imagery on this page already has. The Disc also features a six minute documentary which is the complete uncut footage of Adam's telling of the stories.

It's funny how sometimes just mentioning an idea can spark a reaction. Those reactions spark actions in another person or idea and before you know it a beautifully creepy film falls right into your arms. If you are there to catch it then the time you spent on that idea becomes something that means something. It's not Citizen Kane, but Boogah! is a damn good ghost story, psychological thriller, and a healthy slice of North Carolina folklore.
